Blepharoplasty

This procedure is a cosmetic surgical procedure to remove excess skin or fat from your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, to eliminate “hooding” or “eye bags”, bringing about a natural, refreshed and more youthful appearance. In Asian eye blepharoplasty, the procedure is different as a fold is added in the eyelids to make the eyes seem larger.
Eyelids

Droopy upper eyelids make you look older than your years and bags under the eyes make you look sad, tired and worn out. You can even suffer from impaired vision as a result of excess skin hanging down from your eyelids, along with eye fatigue and frontal headaches due to the constant effort of lifting the sagging eyelids with the forehead muscles.

The outcome of surgery depends on a person’s age, type of skin, visual acuity, work habits, emotional problems, etc. What a blepharoplasty cannot get rid of are “crow’s feet” nor dark circles under the eyes. Nevertheless, an upper, lower or double blepharoplasty will undoubtedly result in a rejuvenated appearance.

Candidates

If a person is concerned about the appearance of their eyes because of family traits or changes that have occurred while ageing and they are healthy with no significant eye problems, then blepharoplasty is an excellent option for improving their appearance and wellbeing.

Technique

For an upper blepharoplasty, the surgeon makes incisions that follow the natural crease of your eyelid and starts removing excess skin, fat or muscle; then smoothing the underlying muscle and tightening the underlying structures. The scar is hidden in the natural fold of your eyelid and is therefore invisible.

For a lower blepharoplasty in young patients without excess skin, the fat is removed using a technique called trans-conjunctival blepharoplasty which does not require external incisions. In older patients, or in patients with excess skin and/or muscle, an incision is made just below the eyelashes where the scar can be hidden, and the fat removed.

Your new look

Your eyes will look more attractive, larger and brighter for years to come. During the first month after the procedure, it is advisable to keep sun exposure to a minimum. You can return to work four days after surgery.
